Merchant Center Feed Ops

Google Shopping Feed Management for Growing Catalogs: A Practical Workflow

A product feed that works for 50 products often falls apart at 5,000. Prices drift out of sync, new variants arrive without images, and nobody notices that a supplier changed product IDs until performance drops. Feed management is the routine work that keeps Google Merchant Center data accurate as a catalog grows. This page outlines a workflow that small teams can actually maintain. MerchantCenterPro's full article on Google Shopping feed management goes into tools and automation options.

Choose one source of truth

The feed should be generated from the same system that powers the website: your Shopify admin, WooCommerce database or ERP. Spreadsheets maintained by hand are fine for a test, but they drift out of sync. If several systems hold product data, decide which one wins for price, stock, titles and images, and document it.

Pick a delivery method

Use supplemental feeds and rules instead of editing the source

Many fixes do not belong in the store database: Shopping-specific titles, custom labels, product_type values or corrected categories. Merchant Center's feed rules and supplemental feeds let you add or override attributes by ID without touching the website. Keep these changes documented so the next person understands why a title differs from the page heading.

A weekly routine

  1. Check the Products overview for new disapprovals and warnings; group them by issue.
  2. Look for price and availability mismatches and find out why they happened.
  3. Review newly added products: images, titles, GTIN or MPN, variants.
  4. Check that sale prices ended when promotions ended.
  5. Review the search terms report in Google Ads to see which titles match real searches.

Disapprovals found in step 1 can be worked through with MerchantCenterPro's guide to disapproved products in Google Merchant Center.

A monthly routine

Warning signs that the feed needs attention

Feed accuracy also protects the account itself: persistent mismatches can contribute to account-level problems. If that has already happened, see what to do when a Merchant Center account is suspended. For campaign structure once the feed is clean, read the Shopping campaign structure page on this site.
