Merchant Center Feed Ops

Structuring Google Shopping Campaigns Around Your Product Feed

A clean Merchant Center feed gets products approved, but campaign structure decides which products get budget. Many stores run a single Performance Max or Shopping campaign with every product in one group and then wonder why the same ten items take all the spend. This page describes simple structures that give you more control, using attributes you already have in the feed.

Start from the feed: custom labels

Google Ads can split products by brand, category, product type, item ID and five custom labels (custom_label_0 to custom_label_4). Custom labels are the most flexible because you define them. Common uses:

Labels are maintained in the feed or in a supplemental feed. MerchantCenterPro explains feed-side preparation in how to optimize Google Merchant Center product data.

Structure 1: split by margin

Create separate campaigns or asset groups for high-margin and low-margin products, each with its own return-on-ad-spend target. This stops low-margin products from consuming budget at a target that only works for high-margin ones.

Structure 2: bestsellers versus the rest

Put proven products in one campaign with a stable budget, and newer or slower products in another with a smaller budget and a lower target. Review the tiers monthly and move products between them.

Structure 3: Standard Shopping alongside Performance Max

Performance Max uses all Google channels and automates bidding; Standard Shopping gives more visibility into search terms and lets you add negative keywords. Some advertisers keep a Standard Shopping campaign for a product group where search-term control matters, and use Performance Max for the rest. Avoid targeting the same products with both unless you understand how Google prioritizes between them.

Free listings and ratings

Products approved in Merchant Center can also appear in free listings on the Shopping tab. Collecting product reviews and seller ratings through an approved review provider can add star ratings to listings. Merchant promotions can show a "special offer" link when you run a genuine discount.

Measurement basics

Keep search terms clean

In Standard Shopping, review the search terms report every week or two and add negative keywords for irrelevant queries, such as free, used, repair or job searches when you only sell new products. Performance Max offers fewer controls, but account-level negative keywords and brand exclusions can still keep spend away from searches you cannot convert.

When to restructure

Restructure when the data says so: a product group with spend but no sales, or a tier whose products consistently beat target. Frequent changes reset learning for automated bidding, so make adjustments in batches.
